Associate of Science Degree

The Associate of Science (AS) degree is awarded to students who successfully complete at least 60 semester credits of occupational and related general educational courses. The AS degree program is to prepare students for gainful employment or for transfer to a four-year college/ university.

The College has Associate of Science curricula in the following 12 programs:

• Community and Public Health (CPH)
• Criminal Justice (CJ)
• Education (ED)
• Environmental/Marine Science (ES)
• General Electronics (GE)
• Information Technology (IT)
• Library & Information Services (LS)
• Nursing (NU)
• Tourism & Hospitality (TH)
  • Tour Services
  • Hospitality Management

Entrance Requirements – To enter the Associate of Science program, a student must meet the following requirements:

1. Be a high school or adult high school graduate with a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.5, OR
2. Possess a HiSET diploma with a minimum total scaled score of 45 on all five subtests, OR
3. Possess a GED diploma with a minimum total score of 145 on each subject, OR
4. Be a currently enrolled student with a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.5.

Note: Nursing Program applicants must have Hepatitis B immunization prior to the beginning of clinical experience.

Exit Requirements – To be granted the Associate of Science degree, the following must be fulfilled:

1. Satisfactorily complete all program requirements. Degree program, general education, and other required courses for each major are specified under “Programs and Courses.” General Education including Core Requirements for each program can be chosen from the following:
   • English (EN Core) – Minimum of 3 credits from: EN112 or Above (Except CPH).
   • Quantitative (MA Core) – Minimum of 3 credits from: MA105 or Above (MA103 for BU, CJ, CPH, NU, TH).
   • Natural Science (SC Core) – Minimum of 4 credits from: AG111, SC103, SC109, SC110, SC119, SC120, SC159A, SC159B, SC160, SC161, SC190, SC205, SC206, SC209, SC239, SC249, SC270 (except ES, NU, CPH).
   • Social Science/Humanities (SS/HUM Core) – 1 credit from SS100 and a minimum of 3 credits from: HI159, HI169, HI179, HI189, HI209, VA109, EN189, EN219, CO201, CO205, PH169, PH249, RE169, CH109, JP109, JP119, JP209, JP219, SS109, SS119, SS129, SS149, SS189, SS201, SS203, SS209, SS219, SS229, MU100, MU102, MU106, PW101, PW119.
   • Health and Physical Education (HP Core) – Minimum of 2 credits from: HP180, HP181, HP185 (except NU, CPH).
     • Note: See individual programs for specific course requirements.
2. Successful completion of the minimum credits required for each program.
3. Have a minimum grade point average of 2.0.
4. Have a grade of C or better in each program course.
5. Have a grade of C or better in each other required course.
6. Residency: Final 12 credits must be taken on PCC campus. The residency requirement may be waived for cause at the option of the Vice President of Education and Training.
7. File an application for graduation. Refer to the “Application for Graduation” section of the catalog for complete details.
8. Fulfill all financial obligations to the College.

Note:

1. Credits earned from courses numbered below 100 are not counted toward the AS degree and not transferable to four-year colleges/ universities.
2. Students who are planning to transfer to four-year colleges/ universities are advised to take more than the minimum requirements, and should consult with their academic advisors regarding transferable electives.
