Palau Community College (PCC) recently signed an implementing agreement with the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC). Two (2) representatives from JAMSTEC visited the campus on Monday, August 03, 2015 to finalize the agreement with the college. They met with PCC President Dr. Patrick U. Tellei and PCC Director of Computer & Data Processing Bruce Rimirch. The representatives from JAMSTEC were JAMSTEC – Research Center of Earthquakes & Tsunami Group Leader Yasushi Ishihara and JAMSTEC staff member Junko Yoshimitsu.
In collaboration with the Earthquake Research Institute of the University of Tokyo, JAMSTEC operates and manages the Pacific Seismographic Observation Network which consists of approximately twenty (20) digital broadband three (3) component seismometer stations and ten (10) geomagnetic stations in the regions of south eastern Asia and the western Pacific. PCC has cooperatively been operating two (2) broadband seismographic stations in Palau for many years.
The agreement signed between JAMSTEC and PCC establishes a co-operation in operating joint geophysical observation in Palau and developing geophysical data analysis. In Palau, there is a seismic station and a barometric station located on the PCC campus in Koror and the Cooperative Research & Extension (CRE) Research & Development Station in Ngeremlengui.
