An Induction Ceremony for the new members of the Phi Theta Kappa International Honors Society – Beta Omicron Zeta Chapter was held at the Assembly Hall of Palau Community College (PCC) on Monday, February 22, 2016. Present to witness the induction were the families & friends of the new members as well a staff & faculty members of the college. The new society inductees are Rickley O. Antonio, Maylean Benjamin, Viola Francis, Wade E. Kitalong, Jedidah E. Masahiro, Emy-leah K. Ngirchechol, Myla M. Oimei, Qwend-lynn I. Paul, Romeo Reddin, Turang D. Rengiil, Neil Ringang, Judah T. Sibetang, and Rdiall L. Tellei. During the induction, the new officers of the society were also sworn-in: Ms. Myla M. Oimei (President), Ms. Turang D. Rengiil (Vice President), Ms. Emy-leah K. Ngirchechol (Secretary), and Mr. Six Ridep (Treasurer).
The ceremony began with opening remarks from PCC President Dr. Patrick U. Tellei. In his remarks, PCC President Dr. Tellei commended the inductees on being recognized for their academic achievements. He also recognized the members as examples for other students and that the society was a path towards making leaders.
Masami Andreas, the Master of Ceremony, followed the welcoming remarks with a brief history about the Phi Theta Kappa Honors Society. The honor society serves to recognize as well as encourage the academic achievement of two-year college students by providing opportunities for individual growth, development through honors, leadership, and service programming.
The new members were inducted into the society by PCC President Dr. Patrick U. Tellei. After signing their oaths, each student lit a candle that symbolized the knowledge that will lead them forward as members of the society. PCC Dean of Academic Affairs Robert Ramarui administered the oath of office to the new society officers.
In his closing remarks, PCC President Dr. Tellei commented on how light has become the symbol of knowledge. He encouraged the new members to be examples for other students and to do their best in whatever academic endeavors they pursue.
