A vocational training for teachers from the island of Yap offered by the Continuing Education (CE) Division of Palau Community College (PCC) began Monday, June 24, 2013. For eight weeks, two Yapese teachers were trained in agriculture and construction. The Yapese Apprenticeship Program began in the summer of 2003 and has trained over 50 Yapese teachers in various vocational fields.
Thomas Magilmai, trainee in agriculture, was sponsored by Itaru (also known as Johnny) Kishigawa. Mr. Kishigawa is the chairperson of the Organization for Industrial, Spiritual, and Cultural Advancement (OISCA) which established an agricultural center in Palau in 1981.
Gregorio Yow trained in construction under the Land & Survey Bureau. He was sponsored by acting Land & Survey Director Sterlina Gabriel. Under the Bureau, he learned the skills needed for masonry and construction.
A luncheon was held on August 16, 2013 to commemorate the two participants for completing the apprenticeship program. Present at the ceremony along with the sponsors were PCC President Patrick U. Tellei, Cooperative & Extensive Research (CRE) Vice President Thomas Taro, Dean of Students Sherman Daniel, CE Dean Willy Wally, acting Dean of Academic Affairs Robert Ramarui, and Vice President Jay Olegeriil.
